Lehigh Legacy: James Maida’s Strategic Leadership and Philanthropy

James Maida’s appointment as Chair of Lehigh University’s Board of Trustees marks a significant moment for a family deeply rooted in the institution’s history. As a second-generation Lehigh graduate, Maida’s ties to the university are both personal and profound, bridging decades of family tradition and commitment.

A Three-Generation Lehigh Legacy

James Maida represents the second generation in a family legacy of Lehigh graduates that spans three generations. His late father, Robert ’57, and mother, Elaine, initiated this tradition of excellence at Lehigh. James, along with his siblings Joseph ’83 and Jeanette Maida Brick ’86, continued the tradition, followed by his daughters, Lauren ’17 and Alexis ’19. The university holds special significance for Maida, who met his wife, Dr. Sharon Maida, on its campus. Dr. Maida is recognized for her pioneering work in orientation and mobility for visually impaired children and served on the Dean’s Advisory Council for the College of Education. The couple has four children and two grandchildren.

Strategic Philanthropy and Service

As a trustee since 2015, Maida has been a strong advocate for Lehigh’s mission, both academic and residential. The family’s generosity is evident with their $5 million contribution that led to the establishment of Maida House, a key component of the campus’s living-learning environment. The Maida Education Abroad Grants provide essential opportunities for students facing financial challenges to gain global exposure. Additionally, the Maidas support scholarships for students from a local high school with significant financial need.

Professional Background

James Maida is the president and CEO of Gaming Laboratories International (GLI), a leading organization in the gaming industry. His leadership has been recognized with multiple industry accolades, including an induction into the American Gaming Association (AGA) Hall of Fame. With over 1,500 employees worldwide, Maida’s expertise in global markets and technology is a significant asset to Lehigh’s board. He holds a bachelor’s degree in computer science engineering from Lehigh and a JD in taxation from Rutgers School of Law.

Honoring Vincent Forlenza ’75

Vincent Forlenza’s tenure as Chair of the Board was transformative, highlighted by the launch of “Inspiring the Future Makers”, a strategic roadmap for the next decade. His leadership also saw the advancement of GO Beyond: The Campaign for Future Makers and the Making the Future” Campus Plan. These initiatives strengthened Lehigh’s foundation and expanded its impact, including the modernization of governance and significant campus projects like the renovated Clayton University Center at Packer Hall.

A Vision for Health and Innovation

During his time on the board, Forlenza played an instrumental role in navigating the university through the global pandemic. Beyond Lehigh, Forlenza has actively championed neurodiversity, co-founding the Quest Autism Foundation and collaborating with Lehigh’s College of Education to enhance support for individuals with autism in the workplace. A 1975 graduate in chemical engineering, Forlenza’s journey from student leader to Chair exemplifies the enduring commitment of Lehigh alumni.
