Florida Maintains Top Spot for Education Freedom for Third Year
Tallahassee, Fla., January 21, 2026 – Florida has once again been recognized for its leadership in educational choice, securing the number one position in the nation for Education Freedom according to the ALEC Index of State Education Freedom: A 50 State Guide to Parental Empowerment. This marks the third consecutive year Florida has achieved this distinction, with the state also claiming the top spot in categories like student-centered funding, charter schools, and homeschooling, and was the only state to receive an A+ rating in the rankings.
Commissioner of Education Anastasios Kamoutsas emphasized the state’s commitment to educational choice, stating, “Florida’s continued recognition as number one in Education Freedom reflects Governor Ron DeSantis’ leadership and unwavering commitment to putting students and families first. Florida leads the nation because we provide all students and families with access to high-quality school choice options that meet their individual needs.”
The ALEC Index evaluates educational opportunities across the United States, focusing on areas such as freedom programs, charter schools, homeschooling, virtual schooling, and open enrollment. Florida’s top ranking illustrates the state’s dedication to expanding educational access and choice for families.
In addition to the top overall ranking for Education Freedom in the 2026 ALEC Index of State Education Freedom Report, Florida also excelled in specific categories:
