Embroidery, a craft often associated with quiet, meticulous labor, has unexpectedly become an artistic avenue for one individual. Raised in an environment where textile arts were a common pastime, this artist never anticipated becoming an embroiderer despite early exposure to the craft through family gatherings.
How Did the Project Begin?
The journey into this creative project was initiated in 2019, following the loss of a beloved grandfather. Known as Baba Musa, he was a towering figure both literally and metaphorically, standing 6-foot-5 with a commanding voice and a heart of gold. His background as a military man in Sudan and his role in raising a family in Khartoum left a lasting impression on his grandchild.
The artist’s family hails from the Dinka community in Abyei. Born in Khartoum, the artist’s early life included time in Cairo before immigrating to the United States. The echoes of the Second Sudanese Civil War and the spirit of revolution among the Sudanese people are deeply ingrained in the family’s narrative, instilling a strong sense of pride in their heritage.
In a dream occurring a year after Baba Musa’s passing, the artist found a renewed connection, which sparked a period of intense writing and reflection. This creative process became a way to navigate grief, capturing both the pride and the melancholy associated with home—a place mostly experienced through the stories of others.
Artistic Inspirations
An important influence in the artist’s life has been their mother, who often engaged with the written word in Arabic, leaving poetic notes on everyday items like mail and books. Although the artist’s proficiency in Arabic literacy might need improvement, the poetic legacy left by the mother resonates deeply.
Participating in a residency has provided the artist with invaluable support, fostering confidence in their artistic pursuits. The residency emphasizes the artistic process over recognition, creating a nurturing environment to experiment and grow. The backing of a gallery and a community of fellow artists has been instrumental in this artistic journey.
