Drake University Launches DU Korea Study Abroad Program in Seoul

Drake University is expanding its global education initiatives with the introduction of a new study abroad program in Seoul, South Korea. Building on the success of its previous cohort programs in Spain and England, Drake is set to launch the DU Korea program in collaboration with WorldStrides and Konkuk University, starting in Spring 2027.

This new program in Seoul will cater to students from all majors, offering an opportunity for 10 to 20 students to immerse themselves in a vibrant international setting. With 37 percent of Drake’s study abroad participants choosing cohort programs, this new addition highlights the university’s commitment to providing an immersive educational experience that aligns with their academic goals.

Drake’s cohort programs offer a unique blend of support and academic structure. Students enroll in a common course taught by Drake faculty while also taking classes at the partner institution to fulfill degree requirements. This model not only supports their academic journey but also fosters a strong connection to their peers and the Drake community.

The introduction of the DU Korea program aims to encourage personal growth and intercultural learning. Students will face new challenges and opportunities as they engage with local university life and students from diverse backgrounds. The cohort model was first introduced in 2020 with the DU Spain program and later expanded to Harlaxton College in England in 2023.

“The cohort model embodies Drake’s mission to build a global perspective, and we’re thrilled to bring this successful approach to Seoul,” said Annique Kiel, chief global affairs officer and dean of global programs at Drake University. “When students live and learn in a vibrant capital city like Seoul with the support of a Drake faculty member, they gain a level of confidence that helps maximize their experience. Students who participate in this program will not only have access to a world-class curriculum that sets them up for a breadth of careers but also the opportunity to further develop their intercultural competency and grow as responsible global citizens.”

Drake faculty-in-residence will lead an experiential course in Seoul, integrating local experiences with academic learning. Kelley Ellis, associate dean of student affairs and associate professor of practice in accounting, will guide the inaugural cohort with the course “Business for Good,” facilitating intercultural learning alongside Konkuk University students. Additional program features include elective internships, a trip to Busan, and a multi-day excursion to Tokyo, as well as various cultural activities.

Seoul was strategically selected as the new cohort location to address growing interest among students in South Korea and Asia. By enhancing its study abroad offerings, Drake University not only responds to student feedback but also strengthens its position in international education, having ranked #39 for undergraduate study abroad participation in the U.S. In 2025, the university reported that 32% of its graduating seniors had studied abroad, significantly higher than the national average of 10%.

For those interested in joining the inaugural Spring 2027 Seoul cohort, applications are now open. Additional details about the program, including academic structure, available courses, internships, cultural activities, cost, scholarships, and deadlines, can be found on Drake’s study abroad application site, Via.
