In a ceremony celebrating exceptional contributions to society, Marty Martin, President of Drake University, was recognized by his alma mater, the University of Kentucky. Honored as one of 20 inductees, Martin was welcomed into the University’s Hall of Distinguished Alumni on September 12. This accolade, awarded every five years, is the highest honor given by the UK Alumni Association.
Dr. Martin’s educational journey began at the University of Kentucky, where he earned both his bachelor’s degree and a J.D. His career started as a Judge Advocate General Officer in the United States Air Force, serving actively from 1987 to 1995, and later as a reservist until his retirement as a lieutenant colonel in 2007. Post-active duty, Martin pursued an LL.M. at Yale Law School in 1996, transitioning thereafter to academia at the University of Illinois College of Law. His career further flourished with roles as a professor and associate dean at Texas Wesleyan University School of Law, followed by a decade at Gonzaga University, where he served as dean of the law school and executive vice president. In 2015, Martin took on his current role as Drake University’s 13th president.
Drake University Board of Trustees Chair Paul Schickler praised Martin’s accomplishments, stating, “President Martin’s work and achievements at Drake University are a clear indication of why he was named a recipient of this prestigious award.” He further noted Martin’s impact on both the University of Kentucky and the broader Drake community.
Martin’s leadership at Drake University is characterized by a focus on excellence in education, student achievement, and community involvement. His tenure is highlighted by initiatives that resonate with the values of the Distinguished Alumni award:
