Drake and Iowa State Students Win Media Plan Case Competition

Award-Winning Strategy: Students Triumph in National Media Competition

In a compelling showcase of strategic thinking and creativity, Tess Meggison from Drake University and Campbell Valline from Iowa State University emerged as champions at the 17th Washington Media Scholars Foundation (WMSF) Media Plan Case Competition. Their victory earned each of them a $5,000 scholarship, a testament to their innovative approach.

The duo captivated a panel of esteemed media and advertising executives with their data-driven campaign, presented at the prestigious WMSF awards luncheon in Washington, D.C., on June 11.

This year, the competition partnered with Responsibility.org and posed a challenging real-world brief to participants: “Campus Reset: Driving Alcohol 101+ Adoption Across South Carolina’s Public Higher Education System.”

Armed with a hypothetical budget of $300,000, Meggison and Valline crafted comprehensive media plans, focusing not only on reach and impressions but also on influencing behavior and promoting responsibility within American communities.

In preparation for their final pitch, the students spent a week immersed in educational sessions, networking, and hands-on experiences with industry leaders, touring top media agencies and political consulting firms in Washington, D.C.

Mike Jones of Gray Media, the presenting sponsor of WMSF, remarked on the impressive talent of the participants: “The caliber of students that come through WMSF is something you don’t often see at this stage of a career. These aren’t students anymore, really. They’re colleagues.”
