In a move set to reshape Arizona’s educational landscape, a $10 million donation has been pledged to enhance a pioneering undergraduate program that merges technical and business skills. This initiative marks the first of its kind in the state, aiming to equip students with a unique blend of expertise.
The Integrated Business and Engineering Program has been renamed the Mary and Felipe M. Rodriguez Integrated Business and Engineering Program, following the couple’s significant contribution. The renaming ceremony was attended by notable figures, including University leaders, Arizona Gov. Katie Hobbs, and Sen. Mark Kelly, alongside the Rodriguezes.
A Collaborative Educational Approach
This innovative degree, born from the collaboration between the Eller College of Management and the College of Engineering, addresses the increasing need for graduates who possess both technical skills and business insight. Students are trained in various fields such as engineering design, artificial intelligence, and business strategies including accounting and entrepreneurship.

University of Arizona President Suresh Garimella expressed gratitude, stating, “I am pleased to recognize Mary and Felipe Rodriguez for this generous commitment… Partners like Mary and Felipe help us deliver on our promise of success for every student.”
A Vision for Future Leaders
Felipe Rodriguez, the founder and CEO of Aeronautical Systems Incorporated, and Mary Barrett Rodriguez, a key figure in the company’s charitable initiatives, have long supported educational advancements. Their philanthropy focuses on bridging the gap between technical and business disciplines, as they articulated, “Every great leap in human history happens at an intersection… To us, this philanthropy is an act of ‘radical trust’ in the future.”
Karthik Kannan, dean of the Eller College of Management, remarked on the program’s impact, “This program reflects the very best of both colleges… It will provide uniquely qualified graduates ready to make an immediate impact in their chosen industry.”

The program emphasizes an integrative educational experience, offering students exposure to both engineering and business perspectives through real-world projects and mentorships.
Kimberly L. Ogden, Craig M. Berge Interim Dean of the College of Engineering, highlighted the program’s dual focus, saying, “Companies have historically had to choose between engineering expertise and business acumen. The education offered through this program means employers can have both.”
This dual-skill education is in high demand across sectors including healthcare, engineering, and aerospace, with expectations that graduates will drive future innovations and economic growth.
During the dedication event, John-Paul Roczniak, CEO of the University of Arizona Foundation, announced the gift’s contribution to a record-breaking $425 million fundraising year, part of the $3 billion Fuel Wonder campaign.
Roczniak noted, “Mary and Felipe’s gift is a powerful example of the role philanthropy plays at the U of A… I’m grateful to them for their investment.”
