SEMICON West Relocates to Phoenix: A New Hub for Microelectronics
In a significant shift within the semiconductor industry, SEMICON West, a major microelectronics exhibition and conference, will transition from the San Francisco Bay Area to Phoenix, Arizona. This move, announced by SEMI, marks the beginning of a five-year rotational schedule starting in 2025, with the event taking place in October instead of July from 2024 onwards.
Joe Stockunas, president of SEMI Americas, expressed enthusiasm about the relocation, stating, SEMI is excited to bring SEMICON West to Phoenix, a booming semiconductor manufacturing hub, in October 2025.
Greater Phoenix, which hosts over 75 semiconductor firms such as EMD Electronics, Intel, and Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company (TSMC), employs more than 100,000 individuals in the sector with plans for further expansion.
Arizona’s leadership echoed this sentiment, with Governor Katie Hobbs proudly noting, Arizona has become a global leader in chip manufacturing and innovation, with rapid growth across our entire semiconductor ecosystem.
The state is set to showcase its achievements in the field by hosting global industry leaders alongside SEMICON West.
The Mayor of Phoenix, Kate Gallego, highlighted the transformative impact of the semiconductor industry’s growth in the region, sharing that the city is already witnessing benefits such as new jobs, suppliers, housing, and educational opportunities. SEMICON West’s presence will underscore and amplify Phoenix’s commitment to attracting and growing our advanced manufacturing and semiconductor industries,
she emphasized.
Recent developments in Arizona further support this strategic move. The state announced a $100 million investment in semiconductor research and development through the U.S. CHIPS and Science Act. Additionally, TSMC has committed to tripling its investment in Phoenix to $40 billion, which is projected to create 13,000 high-tech jobs and produce cutting-edge 3-nanometer chips by 2026.
Education in the region is also thriving, with Arizona State University boasting the largest engineering program in the United States, featuring over 30,000 students, including 7,000 in microelectronics-related fields. The Maricopa Community Colleges are contributing by offering quick-start programs to increase the number of skilled technicians available to local semiconductor companies.
The Phoenix Convention Center will host SEMICON West from October 7-9, 2025. The event will return to the Moscone Center in San Francisco during alternate years. This year’s SEMICON West remains unaffected and is scheduled for July 11-13 at the Moscone Center.
