North Carolina Allocates $12 Million for Community Revitalization
In a significant move to bolster community development, the North Carolina Department of Commerce has disbursed over $12 million in grants to enrich housing and public infrastructure for residents with low to moderate incomes. This initiative, part of the Community Development Block Grant – Neighborhood Revitalization (CDBG-NR) program, aims to uplift eight specific localities across the state.
Governor Josh Stein emphasized the importance of this financial support, stating, “Strong neighborhoods depend on affordable homes and economic opportunities. These grants will enable local leaders to improve housing and public spaces, helping families build stability and supporting long-term economic growth for North Carolinians across the state.”
Commerce Secretary Lee Lilley further elaborated on the program’s impact, noting, “Grants from the Neighborhood Revitalization program help advance our long-standing mission to improve the economic well-being and quality of life for all North Carolinians. These funds will help Hurricane Helene-impacted areas as well as other rural communities improve economic prosperity for their residents.”
Designed to address the unique needs of individual communities, the federally supported CDBG-NR initiative allows municipalities and counties to develop projects that meet their most pressing challenges. This round of funding particularly aids regions recovering from the effects of Hurricane Helene.
The latest allocation supports the following communities with funds reaching up to $5 million per project:
| Community | County | Award |
|---|---|---|
| Avery County | Avery County | $5,000,000 |
| Town of Bethel | Pitt County | $950,000 |
| Town of Elm City | Wilson County | $950,000 |
| Jackson County | Jackson County | $2,530,647 |
| Town of La Grange | Lenoir County | $950,000 |
| Town of Nashville | Nash County | $950,000 |
| Town of Sandyfield | Columbus County | $143,412 |
| Town of Wallace | Duplin County | $556,400 |
The CDBG program, overseen by N.C. Commerce’s Rural Economic Development Division, is a component of the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD). Since 2017, it has provided over $355 million to North Carolina, enhancing community vitality through housing improvements, infrastructure development, and expanded economic opportunities. Notably, the program mandates that at least 70 percent of funds support low and moderate-income households.
