Michigan’s Economic Growth: Fairlife and Chobani Projects Expand Jobs

Michigan’s Economic Growth Boosted by Strategic Investments in Key Industries

Recent developments in Michigan’s economic landscape highlight a significant influx of investments aimed at bolstering the state’s position in diverse sectors. These initiatives, supported by the Make It in Michigan Competitiveness Fund, promise to create numerous employment opportunities and enhance the state’s infrastructure and industrial capabilities.

fairlife Expands Operations

In Coopersville, Ottawa County, fairlife is set to expand its production capacity with the addition of two high-speed production lines for lactose-free milk and protein shakes. The expansion, announced in March 2026, involves a $650 million investment, creating approximately 200 full-time positions. The project benefits from an Alternative State Essential Services Assessment (ASESA) abatement valued at $3.9 million and a $3.275 million grant from the Michigan Department of Agriculture and Rural Development (MDARD) for production infrastructure. An additional $17 million grant from the Make It in Michigan Competitiveness Fund will improve the regional water system to foster community growth.

Chobani’s Significant Investment in Norton Shores

Chobani is expanding its La Colombe coffee manufacturing facility in Norton Shores, Muskegon County, with an investment up to $567 million to meet the growing demand for its ready-to-drink lattes. This project is expected to generate 337 new jobs while retaining 312 current positions. Supported by a $5 million Michigan Business Development Program grant and a $2.3 million MDARD grant, the expansion will enhance wastewater infrastructure and support sustainable agricultural practices in the dairy supply chain. An additional $28 million from the Make It in Michigan Competitiveness Fund will assist in modernizing the regional wastewater system.

Mitra Chem’s Strategic Move in Egelston Township

Mitra Chem plans to establish a plant in Egelston Township, Muskegon County, to produce lithium iron phosphate cathode materials for critical markets. This project, with a total investment of over $370 million, includes a $100 million grant from the U.S. Department of Energy and $50 million from the Make It in Michigan Competitiveness Fund. It is anticipated to create 150 permanent jobs and 600 construction jobs, with groundbreaking expected in early 2027 and commissioning in 2028.

Hemlock Semiconductor’s Role in the Semiconductor Supply Chain

Hemlock Semiconductor, a key player in hyper-pure polysilicon production, stands to benefit from up to $325 million in proposed federal funding and $40 million from the Make It in Michigan Competitiveness Fund. This potential expansion could add up to 180 manufacturing jobs and over a thousand construction opportunities, reinforcing Michigan’s leadership in the global semiconductor supply chain.

State and local leaders emphasize the importance of these projects in driving economic growth and creating job opportunities. As Governor Gretchen Whitmer stated, “Investments supported by the Make It in Michigan Competitiveness Fund show the world that Michigan is the best place to make stuff, grow stuff, and build a thriving economy.”

These developments underline Michigan’s commitment to fostering a robust economic environment through strategic investments and partnerships, ensuring long-term growth and prosperity for its communities and workforce.
