Michigan Unveils Major Investments in Jobs, Infrastructure, and Business Growth
LANSING, Mich. – In a significant boost to Michigan’s economic landscape, Governor Gretchen Whitmer announced the Michigan Strategic Fund Board’s approval of several initiatives poised to enhance job creation, infrastructure development, and business growth across the state. These projects, backed by state funding, underline Michigan’s commitment to attracting investments and fostering a thriving business environment.
FANUC America Corporation Expansion in Pontiac
FANUC America Corporation, a leader in robotics and automation, is set to expand its operations in Pontiac with a new 840,000 square-foot facility. This venture, aimed at meeting the rising domestic demand for robotics, will create at least 225 new jobs and involve a capital investment of $90 million. Governor Whitmer’s discussions with FANUC executives during a 2023 visit to Japan emphasized Michigan’s support for advanced manufacturing. “For more than 40 years, FANUC America has manufactured robots in Michigan,” stated Mike Cicco, president and CEO of FANUC America.
SAPA Transmission’s New Facility in Shelby Township
SAPA Transmission, Inc. plans to enhance its production capabilities with a state-of-the-art manufacturing facility in Shelby Township. This expansion, involving a $163 million investment, will generate at least 328 jobs with competitive starting wages. The Michigan Strategic Fund Board has approved a $5 million grant to support this project, reinforcing Michigan’s role as a hub for defense manufacturing. “SAPA Transmission’s continued progress in Michigan is a testament to the exceptional partnership between industry, state leadership, and local communities,” said Darren Werner, President of SAPA Transmission.
Revitalization of Detroit’s Eastern Market District
Detroit’s Eastern Market district is set for a transformation with a mixed-use development project approved by the Michigan Strategic Fund Board. This initiative will introduce 17 new apartments and 6,500 square feet of retail space, leveraging a $1.5 million grant. The project aims to revitalize vacant properties and boost residential density. “I am grateful for all the hard work that everyone at the MEDC and the DEGC put in to help Basco realize this project,” said developer Roger Basmajian.
Infrastructure Boost in Erie Township
The Michigan Ready Sites program has awarded Erie Township an $8.5 million grant to upgrade sewer infrastructure, enhancing over 500 acres of industrial and commercial land. This investment is expected to reduce development risks and attract more businesses to the region. “This Michigan Build Ready Sites grant is a transformative investment that positions Erie Township for long-term economic growth,” stated Mike Grodi, supervisor for Erie Township.
Small Business Support Hubs 2.0 Program
Eleven organizations have been chosen to lead the Small Business Support Hubs 2.0 program, backed by nearly $11.3 million in state funding. These hubs will provide vital resources to small businesses across Michigan’s 10 prosperity regions. “Through a coordinated, expert network, 11 organizations will help entrepreneurs access the capital, technical assistance, connections, and other tools they need to grow and scale in Michigan,” said Amy Rencher, senior vice president of Small Business at the MEDC.
Expansion of the Michigan Innovate Capital Fund
The Michigan Innovate Capital Fund has received an additional $3 million to support early-stage companies, bringing its total funding to $36 million. The new guidelines will allow for more flexible financing options, including loans and equity investments. “This support from the MSF Board expands access to capital and gives Michigan’s high-growth startups more flexible financing tools to meet critical needs as they scale,” said Alison Todak, vice president of Entrepreneurship & Innovation at the MEDC.
