JA Solar to Launch $60M Solar Facility in Phoenix, Creating 600 Jobs

New Solar Manufacturing Facility to Boost Arizona’s Economy

In a significant move for the renewable energy sector, JA Solar has announced its decision to establish its first U.S. manufacturing facility in Phoenix, Arizona. This $60 million investment is set to create over 600 jobs, underscoring the state’s commitment to clean energy and economic growth.

PHOENIX, AZ (January 10, 2023) — JA Solar, a leader in solar cell and module manufacturing globally, has committed to its inaugural U.S. manufacturing venture by leasing space in Phoenix, Arizona. The facility will produce advanced photovoltaic (PV) products, with operations expected to commence by the fourth quarter of 2023. This project is anticipated to generate over 600 new jobs in the region.

The facility represents a $60 million investment and will be equipped with highly automated assembly lines. These will produce efficient solar panels suitable for both commercial and residential applications, as well as utility-scale solar power plants. Once fully operational, the plant is expected to have an annual production capacity of 2 gigawatts (GW).

Arizona Governor Katie Hobbs expressed enthusiasm for the development, stating, Arizona is proud to welcome JA Solar’s first U.S. manufacturing facility to Phoenix. There’s no better place in the world for sustainable industries like solar, and we are excited to see this facility add to Arizona’s clean energy reputation.

Aiqing Yang, President of JA Solar, highlighted the strategic benefits, saying, We are very excited to be able to set up the first U.S. solar module manufacturing facility in Arizona to provide our customers in the U.S. the flexibility and ease of access to JA Solar’s high-performance PV products. JA Solar thanks all the partners in Arizona, especially the ACA, GPEC, and the City of Phoenix for their great support and tremendous assistance during the entire process of site selection and space leasing in preparation to establish the manufacturing facility.

Sandra Watson, President and CEO of the Arizona Commerce Authority, remarked on the state’s appeal, stating, JA Solar’s new facility showcases Arizona’s attractiveness as a global manufacturing destination. We are grateful JA Solar will manufacture its high-efficiency solar panels in Phoenix, enhancing Arizona’s renewable energy industry.

Once the facility begins operations, it will become the largest manufacturing site for solar/PV products in Arizona, boasting a capacity of 2 gigawatts.

Chris Camacho, President and CEO of the Greater Phoenix Economic Council, highlighted the broader economic impact, saying, Innovations in clean technology allow Greater Phoenix to produce the power requisite for promoting job growth throughout the region. We are excited to support JA Solar in its expansion to Phoenix, creating more than 600 jobs for local residents and sustainably bolstering energy production in the region to enable economic transformation.

Phoenix Mayor Kate Gallego emphasized the city’s readiness for such a venture, stating, Solar and advanced manufacturing facilities are a focus of the economic future of Phoenix, and we are honored that JA Solar chose our city for this investment. Phoenix has the workforce and infrastructure, plus a great power provider in SRP, to attract the project to locate here. JA Solar will help us further the City’s Climate Action Plan by moving our city forward towards being carbon neutral as well as employing more than 600 people.
