Pennsylvania Governor Advocates for Stronger Protections for Manufactured Home Residents
In a recent visit to a Berks County neighborhood, Governor Josh Shapiro highlighted the need for legislative reforms to safeguard residents of manufactured home communities in Pennsylvania. With about 56,000 households residing in these communities across the state, many have experienced steep increases in their monthly lot rents, primarily due to the practices of out-of-state management companies.
During the visit, Governor Shapiro met with community members who shared their struggles with rising costs. He emphasized the importance of implementing measures to curb the influence of these management companies, which have been accused of exploiting residents by significantly hiking rents.
“These families deserve better protection against predatory practices. We must act to ensure their stability and security in their homes,” Governor Shapiro stated.
The issue has gained attention as many residents find themselves with limited options, often forced to accept unfavorable terms due to the unique nature of manufactured home ownership, where residents own their homes but rent the land they sit on. The governor’s call for reform comes at a crucial time, as he seeks to address these concerns through potential legislative changes.
