ElectraMeccanica’s New Facility Marks Expansion of Electric Vehicle Manufacturing in Arizona
The landscape of electric vehicle manufacturing in Arizona has taken a significant leap forward with ElectraMeccanica Vehicles Corp. unveiling its new manufacturing facility in Mesa. This strategic move positions the company as an American Original Equipment Manufacturer (OEM) and underscores its commitment to revolutionizing urban mobility.
In a ceremony attended by Governor Doug Ducey, Mesa Mayor John Giles, and various local officials, ElectraMeccanica celebrated the commissioning of its 235,000-square-foot plant, which will serve as the company’s headquarters. Located near the Phoenix-Mesa Gateway Airport, the facility is set to bolster the region’s economy by potentially creating between 200 and 500 jobs across various sectors, including manufacturing and technology.
ElectraMeccanica’s new facility is designed to produce up to 20,000 vehicles annually. It also features a U.S.-based engineering technical center, encompassing 22,000-square-feet of office space and 19,000-square-feet of lab space. The company has begun activating some operations and is ramping up towards full production. Currently, ElectraMeccanica is licensed to sell its signature three-wheeled, single-seater electric vehicle, the SOLO, and its cargo variant in both California and Arizona.
Arizona is a driving force of innovation, and today’s ribbon cutting for ElectraMeccanica is further proof of that,
Governor Ducey remarked. He expressed pride in the unique vehicles that will soon be manufactured in Mesa, further enhancing Arizona’s robust manufacturing sector. Mayor Giles echoed this sentiment, highlighting Mesa’s emergence as a hub for advanced manufacturing and innovation.
ElectraMeccanica’s CEO, Susan Docherty, expressed enthusiasm about the company’s onshoring of vehicle production and the introduction of the U.S.-built 2023 model year SOLO EV. It takes a village to do what we are doing,
she stated, acknowledging the crucial partnerships with local and state government leaders committed to economic development.
The Phoenix metro area, recognized as the fastest-growing region in the U.S., provides a fertile ground for ElectraMeccanica’s operations. Mesa itself is a large suburban area, rich with businesses, educational institutions, and recreational opportunities, aligning well with the company’s vision of urban and suburban mobility solutions.
The new facility is ElectraMeccanica’s fifth in Arizona since 2016, contributing to the state’s growing reputation as a leader in electric vehicle adoption. Arizona ranks seventh nationally in this sector, with four electric vehicles for every 1,000 residents. Beyond its own vehicle production, ElectraMeccanica’s Mesa facility will also offer contract manufacturing opportunities for other companies.
As the new facility becomes operational, stakeholders in the region anticipate the rollout of the locally-built SOLO electric vehicles and ElectraMeccanica’s continued growth in Arizona’s economic landscape. More information about the company can be found here.
