In a strategic move to boost its research and development capacity, ASM International N.V., a global leader in semiconductor equipment, has unveiled plans for a significant North American expansion. This initiative aims to meet the increasing demand for cutting-edge semiconductor technology and innovation.
Major Investment in Scottsdale, Arizona
ASM International, which specializes in Atomic Layer Deposition, will invest over $300 million over the next five years to establish a new advanced facility on more than 20 acres in Scottsdale, Arizona. This investment will encompass infrastructure, state-of-the-art lab equipment, and operational expenses, including the creation of new research and engineering positions.
Celebrating a Milestone
The announcement was made in Scottsdale with notable figures such as ASM CEO Benjamin Loh, Governor Katie Hobbs, and Mark Rutte, Prime Minister of the Netherlands, in attendance. “Arizona is proud to celebrate ASM’s high-tech expansion, a project that further cements Arizona’s semiconductor leadership,” said Governor Hobbs. The new site will become ASM’s North American headquarters, doubling the size of its current facility to 250,000 square feet and integrating various departments for improved collaboration.
Focus on Sustainability and Innovation
The facility will not only advance semiconductor research but also include sustainability features such as renewable energy resources and a water recycling facility. ASM aims to achieve a LEED rating, reduce water use, and has already achieved a 60% reduction in water usage from 2017 to 2022. Additionally, ASM is committing to local environmental initiatives, including partnerships with The Nature Conservancy and the Arizona Sustainability Alliance to support water conservation and urban forestry projects.
Strengthening Global Partnerships
ASM’s expansion is part of a broader strategy to enhance collaboration in the semiconductor industry. Prime Minister Mark Rutte emphasized the importance of U.S.-Netherlands partnerships in advancing the global semiconductor value chain. ASM’s presence in Arizona will support key customers and contribute to a more resilient and innovative semiconductor supply chain.
Economic and Community Impact
ASM’s expansion is expected to create approximately 500 new jobs over six years, bringing its total Arizona workforce to over 1,000 employees. These high-paying technology positions will contribute significantly to the local economy. David Ortega, Mayor of Scottsdale, highlighted ASM’s role in providing sustainable employment opportunities and preserving natural resources.
