Arizona Emerges as a Hub for Semiconductor Manufacturing with TSMC’s Expansion

The transformation of Arizona’s desert landscape into a global technology hub reached a pivotal moment recently, as Governor Doug Ducey and TSMC celebrated a significant development at one of the world’s most advanced chip manufacturing facilities. This milestone marked the installation of the first piece of equipment at the site.

TSMC’s decision to expand its operations in Arizona with a second fabrication plant, totaling a $40 billion investment and creating 4,500 jobs, has solidified its status as a transformative deal for the state. Attending the celebratory event were notable figures including President Joe Biden, U.S. Commerce Secretary Gina Raimondo, and Phoenix Mayor Kate Gallego.

Governor Ducey expressed his enthusiasm, stating, It’s a special day to see this vision take shape. When TSMC set out to build its new high-tech fab, they had all 50 states to choose from. They chose Arizona because of our robust and growing talent pool, unbeatable business environment, and unparalleled quality of life.

TSMC’s Arizona facility represents the largest foreign investment in the state’s history, as initially announced by Governor Ducey in 2020. At the event, TSMC Chairman Dr. Mark Liu highlighted the project’s significance, saying, This is a milestone for TSMC, for the state of Arizona, and for the semiconductor industry in the U.S.

Following the successful CHIPS legislation aimed at reviving domestic manufacturing, Secretary Raimondo commented, This investment in Arizona and future investments are going to transform Arizona’s semiconductor industry.

Apple, a major TSMC client, has committed to purchasing chips manufactured in Arizona. Apple’s CEO Tim Cook remarked, Today, we are combining TSMC’s expertise with the unrivaled ingenuity of American workers. We are investing in a stronger, brighter future.

The new facility will utilize TSMC’s 4-nanometer technology, with plans for a second fab to produce 3-nanometer chips by 2026, achieving an annual capacity of 600,000 wafers. TSMC’s expansion further cements Arizona’s role as a semiconductor hub, attracting over $1 billion from suppliers and creating more than 13,000 jobs in related industries.
