Amkor Technology Invests $2 Billion in Arizona Facility, Creating 2,000 Jobs
PEORIA, AZ (November 30, 2023) — In a significant boost to the US semiconductor industry, Amkor Technology, Inc. (Nasdaq: AMKR) has announced plans to build a cutting-edge packaging and test facility in Peoria, Arizona. This new venture represents a $2 billion investment and is expected to generate approximately 2,000 new jobs.
As the only US-headquartered OSAT (outsourced semiconductor assembly and test) service provider with advanced packaging capabilities, Amkor aims to establish the largest outsourced advanced packaging facility in the United States. “Amkor’s announcement is a historic step forward for Arizona that will bolster America’s national security and build a more resilient supply chain,” said Governor Katie Hobbs.
Giel Rutten, President and CEO of Amkor, emphasized the strategic importance of expanding US semiconductor capabilities: “Expansion of a US semiconductor supply chain is underway, and as the largest US-headquartered advanced packaging company, we are excited to lead the charge in bolstering America’s advanced packaging capabilities.”
The facility will occupy 55 acres of land and feature over 500,000 square feet of clean room space. The first phase is expected to be operational within two to three years, focusing on high-performance computing, automotive, and communications sectors. Amkor’s partnership with Apple will see the tech giant as its first and largest customer at the new site.
This development aligns with the US government’s priorities highlighted by Commerce Secretary Gina M. Raimondo, who has identified advanced packaging as crucial to reviving American semiconductor manufacturing. Amkor has already applied for CHIPS funding, part of a $52.7 billion federal initiative to enhance US competitiveness in the semiconductor field.
Senator Mark Kelly of Arizona remarked, “Amkor’s $2 billion project—one of the largest microchip investments announced in Arizona since the passage of the CHIPS Act last year—will create good-paying jobs, strengthen our local economy, and help protect our national security.”
Amkor has been a long-term strategic partner to TSMC, whose CEO Dr. CC Wei praised the investment: “TSMC applauds Amkor for investing in the future of the semiconductor industry with us in Arizona.”
Jeff Williams, COO of Apple, expressed enthusiasm for the collaboration, stating, “Apple is committed to help build a new era of advanced manufacturing, right here in the US.”
This project, supported by local and state authorities, promises to invigorate the Greater Phoenix metropolitan area by expanding the semiconductor ecosystem and increasing economic activity.
