PHOENIX (April 30, 2026) — Residents of Maricopa County have been cautioned about a new wave of fraudulent text messages attempting to deceive them into believing they owe fines for traffic violations.
Ongoing reports indicate that individuals are receiving texts suggesting they have neglected to settle traffic ticket fines, accompanied by threats of mandatory court appearances. These messages, however, are part of a phishing scam and are not affiliated with the Superior Court of Maricopa County, which does not have a “Traffic Division.”
Phony messages like these are not unique to Maricopa County, as similar fraudulent activities are being reported throughout Arizona and across the United States. The scams often employ intimidating language, counterfeit case numbers, and urgent demands to extract payments from unsuspecting recipients.
Authorities strongly advise the public to refrain from engaging with suspicious messages, including clicking on unknown links or scanning QR codes, which could lead to harmful software being installed on their devices. Official court communications will not solicit immediate payments via phone, text, or email, nor will they ever require money transfers through gift cards, payment apps, cryptocurrency, or wire services.
Community members are encouraged to spread awareness of this scam among their personal and professional networks. Additional information can be found in the alert issued by the Maricopa County Superior Court.
