Maricopa County Supervisors Approve Funds for Election Signature Checks

Maricopa County Allocates Additional Funds for Enhanced Signature Verification in Midterm Elections

PHOENIX (Feb. 25, 2026)—In a move aimed at reinforcing voter confidence and ensuring election integrity, the Maricopa County Board of Supervisors has approved a budget increase for signature verification processes as part of the upcoming midterm elections. The Recorder’s Office received an additional $550,000 to implement a more rigorous verification system characterized by increased bipartisan scrutiny and managerial oversight.

Chair Kate Brophy McGee of District 3 emphasized the importance of this initiative, stating, “Signature verification is under the complete and total control of the Recorder. While we have questions about the Recorder’s new process, we will proceed with the Recorder’s budget requests to ensure sufficient resources are in place by the 2026 Primary. Our top goal is fair and secure elections.”

This decision follows a recent policy approval by the board, which outlines their approach to addressing pivotal election-related matters without a Shared Services Agreement (SSA) with the Recorder’s Office. The policy aligns with the Board’s latest SSA proposal and recognizes the statutory powers of both parties. It allows Recorder Heap to request additional resources if deemed necessary for fulfilling his statutory responsibilities, by adhering to the standard County procedures for supplementary budget requests. The Board, in turn, will evaluate these requests and make informed budgetary decisions accordingly.
