The City of Avondale, in collaboration with Maricopa County and the nonprofit organization A New Leaf, has unveiled a groundbreaking initiative aimed at aiding families grappling with homelessness. The Family Bridge Homes, a temporary housing community, officially opened its doors to provide a vital stepping stone for families working towards securing permanent housing.
The transformative potential of stable housing was emphasized by Steve Gallardo, Supervisor of District 5, Maricopa County Board of Supervisors, who stated, “When a family is struggling to afford housing, it can affect every part of their lives from work and school to their ability to plan for the future.” Family Bridge Homes is designed to offer a safe haven for these families, allowing them to stabilize their lives while pursuing more permanent solutions. The program’s mission is to address the immediate needs of these families and equip them with the necessary resources to overcome housing challenges.
This endeavor was made possible through significant financial investments, including $1.9 million sourced from the federal American Rescue Plan Act (ARPA) allocated by the Maricopa County Board of Supervisors in 2023. The total project, valued at approximately $3 million, also benefited from the City of Avondale’s General Funds. Situated conveniently near the Avondale Resource Center, the facility is a collaborative effort between Maricopa County Hand in Hand, the City of Avondale, and A New Leaf to provide crucial services such as temporary housing, bridge housing vouchers, eviction prevention, and assistance with transitioning to long-term housing.
Family Bridge Homes comprises six duplex-style units designed to accommodate up to 10 families each year. Each unit is equipped with two bedrooms, a private bathroom, and a full kitchen, ensuring families have a secure and comfortable environment as they engage with support services. This initiative underscores Maricopa County’s commitment to fostering stability and providing pathways to permanent housing for families in need. For more information, visit Maricopa.gov/HiH.
