Arizona Issues High Pollution Advisory for Maricopa Due to PM10 Levels

The Arizona Department of Environmental Quality (ADEQ) has issued a High Pollution Advisory (HPA) for smoke and dust in Maricopa County on Friday, July 10. This advisory is in response to anticipated high levels of coarse particulate matter (PM10), which are expected to surpass the federal health standards.

Individuals with heart or lung conditions, seniors, and children are especially vulnerable to the health risks posed by PM10. These tiny particles can penetrate the respiratory system, causing immediate health issues such as eye and throat irritation, coughing, and breathing difficulties. Moreover, exposure might exacerbate existing health problems, including asthma and cardiovascular diseases.

Restricted Activities During HPA

The advisory includes several restrictions aimed at reducing pollution levels:

  • Burning wood in residential settings, including fireplaces and outdoor fire pits, is banned throughout Maricopa County.
  • Government employees and contractors must refrain from using leaf blowers, and residents are encouraged to do the same.
  • Off-road vehicle use should be minimized.

ADEQ advises the public, particularly those with respiratory issues, to limit outdoor activities during this period.

Recommendations for Residents

To help improve air quality, ADEQ and Maricopa County Air Quality Department (MCAQD) recommend the following actions:

  • Avoid activities that create dust, such as driving on unpaved roads.
  • Secure loose soil to prevent it from becoming airborne.
  • Refrain from using fireplaces and wood stoves.
  • Opt for rakes or brooms instead of leaf blowers to clear debris.
  • Reduce driving by using public transport, carpooling, or telecommuting. For more information, visit ShareTheRide.com.

Understanding High Pollution Advisory (HPA)

An HPA alerts the public when air pollution levels are expected to exceed federal health standards.

What is Particulate Matter?

Particulate matter (PM) consists of tiny solid particles and liquid droplets in the air, originating from combustion processes or dust stirred by wind or activities. PM is categorized by size: PM10 (dust particles 10 microns or smaller) and PM2.5 (soot particles 2.5 microns or smaller). For comparison, a human hair is about 70-100 microns thick.
