Celia Cheng’s Rowing Journey: Sacrifices, Triumphs, and Future Plans

As graduation day approaches at the University of Virginia, Celia Cheng finds herself reflecting on a college experience filled with early mornings and missed vacations. Yet, despite the sacrifices, she holds no regrets.

Cheng, who is about to receive her degree in economics, has consistently prioritized her role as the coxswain for UVA’s men’s club rowing team. This dedication has meant forgoing typical college experiences, like spring break trips, in favor of the rigorous demands of rowing.

This commitment will keep her from attending the graduation ceremony in Charlottesville with the Class of 2026. Instead, she will be in Oak Ridge, Tennessee, as her team defends its national title at the American Collegiate Rowing Association regatta.

“What I’ve learned about myself is something I hope I can replicate post-grad,” Cheng stated. “If I really love something that I’m doing, I’ll do pretty much anything to commit to it.”

Cheng’s devotion to rowing has led her to unique experiences, such as racing against her sister at the prestigious Henley Royal Regatta in England. She described the experience as the “coolest 48 hours of my life” and a testament to the opportunities that rowing has provided.

Despite the lack of leisurely sleep-ins, Cheng has amassed a collection of sunrise photos over the Rivanna Reservoir, reminders of the beauty in her disciplined lifestyle.

Cheng’s time in rowing has not only shaped her college years but also prepared her for the future. This summer, she’s set to intern at Jefferies in New York, and her journey continues at London Business School afterward. “(Rowing has) given me more confidence in myself, where I can go do something and pursue what I enjoy without being afraid that I’m doing something out of the ordinary,” she remarked.
