A Year of Growth and Memories at the University of Virginia
As students wrap up another academic year at the University of Virginia (UVA), a diverse array of experiences and emotions have colored their journey. From memorable game days to the serene beauty of the campus, each moment contributes to the unique tapestry of student life.
One student reflects fondly on their time spent on the iconic Lawn, sharing, “This year was my favorite year at UVA.” The daily sight of the Rotunda adds to the charm of their routine walks to class. Another student expresses a sense of maturity gained over the past year, saying, “I feel like I’ve grown up a ton this year.”
For first-year students, moving into dorms symbolizes a new chapter. One parent, while proud, remarks on the challenge of letting go: “I’m so happy and proud of her, but it’s hard letting them go.”
The community spirit is palpable during events like Trick-or-Treating on the Lawn, where students and locals come together. “It’s really nice to see the whole community pour in,” a student notes. The fall season further enhances the campus atmosphere, turning Charlottesville into a sea of orange hues, reminiscent of UVA’s colors.
Sports events, too, play a significant role in the UVA experience. A particular highlight for many was the Florida State game, celebrated with enthusiasm: “It’s intercepted! Virginia has done it!” exclaimed an announcer during the game.
Winter brings its own magic to the campus, with snowball fights becoming a favorite pastime. “The first day that it snowed was like actually magical. Everyone was outside,” recalls a student. The Lighting of the Lawn is another cherished tradition, described as “bigger than one night.”
UVA’s commitment to innovation and exploration is echoed by Lori McMahon, vice president for research, who states, “We see the sky as the limit. We are always curious, and we are always on pace to make the next big discovery.” The university’s holistic approach to student success is further emphasized by Julia Lapan, executive director of career design and discovery.
As the academic year concludes, students express a bittersweet farewell to their time at UVA. One student reflects, “The past four years have been so special, so hard to let go.” Another looks forward with optimism, “I feel so excited to walk down the Lawn, take everything I’ve learned here and bring it into the world.”
With the announcement of Scott C. Beardsley as the University’s 10th president, and ongoing support from alumni like Lily West and Leidra McQueen, the sense of belonging and continuity remains strong. As students prepare to venture into the future, the University of Virginia continues to be a “home for every Hoo.”
