The Anson Correctional Institution is on the verge of receiving a significant recognition, as auditors from the American Correctional Association (ACA) have put forth a recommendation for its accreditation. This development marks a milestone in the institution’s commitment to upholding high standards in correctional management.
Anson Correctional stands as the 57th facility or operation under the North Carolina Department of Adult Correction (NCDAC) to be either recommended for or awarded ACA accreditation. The department is actively working towards achieving this accreditation across all its facilities and operations.
During the detailed inspections that took place from May 4 to May 6, ACA auditors determined that Anson Correctional met all mandatory standards and achieved a compliance rate of 98.7% with non-mandatory standards. A formal decision on the accreditation will be made by the ACA Commission on Accreditation for Corrections at their upcoming meeting.
“This achievement reflects the dedication and high standards that our staff consistently upholds. I am very proud of them,” remarked Warden Carol Torres. She further expressed gratitude to the leadership of NCDAC and the Central Region, along with departmental accreditation and compliance specialists, for their support and guidance throughout the process.
The facility accommodates around 1,200 women in both close and medium custody categories. It offers a variety of rehabilitative educational and vocational programs, ranging from high school equivalency courses to apprenticeships in construction trades.
ACA audits are designed to evaluate essential correctional practices that:
- ensure the safety and security of staff and offenders;
- enhance staff morale;
- improve records maintenance and data management capabilities;
- and improve the function of the facility.
As part of the rigorous accreditation process, ACA auditors spent three days thoroughly inspecting the facility, reviewing its policies and procedures, and assessing operations to ensure compliance with best practices.
