Maricopa County Confirms 3 New Measles Cases, Total Reaches 13

Maricopa County has recently confirmed three additional cases of measles, raising the total number of cases to 13 for the year 2026. These new developments underscore the significance of vaccination and the need for heightened awareness of symptoms to mitigate local transmission.

The latest cases were contracted within Maricopa County and have no ties to travel or known exposure sources. This scenario highlights the continuous risk of local infection amid the current outbreak.

To safeguard the public, notifications are disseminated when potentially exposed individuals cannot be directly identified, enabling those who may have been present in the same location as an infected person to take necessary precautions. Updates on public exposure sites are available through media announcements and on the Maricopa County Department of Public Health website.

Steps for Those Potentially Exposed

  1. Verify Vaccination Status: Ensure your immunization records reflect protection against measles. Those not vaccinated or unsure should consult a healthcare professional.
  2. Monitor for Symptoms: Symptoms may manifest seven to 12 days post-exposure but can take up to 21 days. Key indicators include:

    • High fever (>101°F)
    • Red, watery eyes
    • Cough and runny nose
    • Rash beginning on the face and spreading downward
    • Those eligible may seek post-exposure prophylaxis (PEP) from healthcare providers.

  3. Seek Medical Attention if Symptomatic: Stay home and contact a healthcare provider, disclosing symptoms and potential exposure to prevent further spread.

Preventing Measles

The MMR vaccine is the cornerstone of measles prevention, with two doses typically administered in childhood. Adults require at least one dose post-age one. In line with CDC recommendations, early vaccination for infants aged 6-11 months is advised during outbreaks.

Measles is an exceptionally contagious virus, with a 90% infection rate among the unvaccinated upon exposure. While there is no specific treatment for measles, vaccination remains the most effective preventive measure.

Healthcare providers are encouraged to watch for unvaccinated patients showing symptoms and are required to report suspected cases within 24 hours.
