Balancing Act: A Student’s Journey at UVA
For many students, college life is a whirlwind of activities, but for Maier, a University of Virginia student, it’s a fulfilling journey of self-discovery. Her diverse interests range from competing in gymnastics to pursuing an architecture degree, all while finding time to coach young athletes.
As a competitor in the National Association of Intercollegiate Gymnastics Club nationals in Alabama, Maier also extends her passion for gymnastics by coaching at Gryphon Gymnastics in Charlottesville. “I think the UVA sentiment of ‘work hard, play hard’ is very, very true,” she said. Her commitment to her community is evident as she balances her time between sports, academics, and social activities.
Reflecting on her transition from high school, Maier notes a shift in priorities. “High school was more about finding success from everyone else’s point of view. Now I’m finding success more from my perspective,” she explained. Her high school years were filled with a mix of social and volunteer activities, alongside earning both a diploma and an associate’s degree through dual enrollment at J. Sargeant Reynolds Community College.
At UVA, she embraced opportunities that align with her interests. “When I went to college, I just sought out the things that I enjoy doing, and UVA offers plenty of them,” Maier stated, listing her love for architecture as a primary focus. Her journey into architecture began in middle school, spurred by her enthusiasm for math and art.
The decision to attend UVA was a turning point. Initially considering other prestigious universities, Maier’s visit to UVA’s Days on the Lawn solidified her choice. “I found myself wanting to be rejected from Cornell because I felt that UVA was the place that I wanted to be,” she recalled, emphasizing her contentment with her decision.
Forming strong friendships has been one of the highlights of her time at UVA. “I’ve built really strong friendships here. The Architecture School is a small cohort, and you get to know everyone in that community,” she noted. Her involvement in club gymnastics further enriched her social circle.
Looking ahead, Maier plans to stay in Charlottesville for a while, continuing her coaching role and exploring her passion for set design. She is considering a future in building theater and film sets, with the possibility of pursuing a master’s degree in architecture. “A lot of people say, ‘Do grad school right away so you don’t lose your stamina,’ but I think a gap year can be very beneficial,” she shared, indicating her openness to new experiences during a potential gap year.
