Philadelphia Libraries Engage Young Minds with Soccer Science
As the global enthusiasm for soccer continues to rise, particularly with events like the FIFA World Cup, innovative educational programs are being introduced to tap into this excitement. The Free Library of Philadelphia, in collaboration with The Franklin Institute, is offering a unique opportunity for children and families to delve into the Science of Soccer.
The Science of Soccer initiative is conducted through the Free Library’s LEAP program, which is a complimentary afterschool service that provides students with homework assistance, engaging activities, and access to library resources. Led by LEAP staff, this project aims to bring the physics of the beloved game to life for young learners.
Structured for children aged 6 to 10, the program comprises four interactive activities that unveil the physics of soccer. Participants will engage with tabletop models to examine the effects of force and motion on a soccer ball’s movement, gaining insights into concepts such as speed, direction, and control through practical experimentation.
Running from May to June 2026, the Science of Soccer sessions will be held at select library locations across Philadelphia, primarily during LEAP’s afterschool hours. This drop-in program requires no prior registration, and each session highlights one of the following activities:
- Use the Force!
- On the Field
- Think Fast!
- Foot Friction
Each session spans 30 to 45 minutes, providing a concentrated, hands-on experience for children and their caregivers to enjoy together.
Availability of the program varies depending on the library location. It is recommended to contact your local library for specific details.
