After years in the making, the Virginia Guesthouse Hotel and Conference Center has opened its doors, offering a new hub for students, faculty, and visitors to the University of Virginia. Located strategically in the Emmet-Ivy Corridor, this nine-story establishment aims to provide a welcoming atmosphere for everyone from local residents to travelers.
The hotel, positioned at 2017 Ivy Road and managed by Pyramid Global Hospitality, is a University-owned property. It sits adjacent to the School of Data Science and near the future site of the Karsh Institute of Democracy. General Manager Gregg Hilker, who has been in Charlottesville for nearly a year, states that the hotel is intended to evoke the charm of a small bed-and-breakfast, making it inviting to all guests.
Upon entering the Guesthouse, visitors are welcomed by the UVA Welcome Center, a student-operated desk managed by Emmet-Ivy Corridor Program Manager Darcie Weigand. This center acts as a resource for prospective students and their families, connecting them with current students for guidance and information.
Next to the Welcome Center is The Counter Café, offering full barista service from 7 a.m. to noon, with plans to extend hours until 6 p.m. by the end of April. The café provides coffee, pastries, and various grab-and-go options, making it a convenient stop for both hotel guests and the public.
The ground floor, designed as a communal space, invites individuals to relax, enjoy a coffee, or engage with others in the hotel’s “living room.” Data science students have already begun using this space for collaborative work and study sessions, aligning with Hilker’s vision of fostering interactions between students and hotel guests.
The Guesthouse’s dining facilities include Poplar, a restaurant named after the poplar trees linked to Thomas Jefferson. It features an exhibition kitchen serving meals throughout the day, alongside a private dining parlor and an open-air terrace offering views of Central Grounds and the School of Data Science.
Above, The Perch provides a rooftop bar experience with panoramic views of the Blue Ridge Mountains and the University Grounds. Outfitted with retractable sunshades and heating elements, this space is designed for year-round enjoyment, offering a casual setting for faculty gatherings and social events.
In addition to its 214 guestrooms, the Guesthouse boasts 25,000 square feet of meeting and event space, capable of accommodating up to 1,000 people. The Grand Ballroom alone spans nearly 10,000 square feet and can be partitioned to host smaller events. Other facilities include the Main Hall, flexible studios, and a Drawing Room with a terrace, all equipped with the latest audiovisual technology.
Reservations for the conference and meeting spaces can be made through the hotel’s sales team, ensuring that the Virginia Guesthouse caters to both large functions and intimate gatherings.
