The increasing accessibility and affordability of drone technology have raised concerns about potential threats to critical infrastructure and public safety. To tackle these challenges, a concerted effort in planning and information sharing is crucial.
Enter the Southern Nevada Unmanned Aircraft Systems/Counter-Unmanned Aircraft Systems (UAS/CUAS) Working Group. This newly established group, co-chaired by Barry Ryan, Project Manager at Nevada National Security Sites (NNSS), and Jeremy Hynds, Assistant Emergency Manager for the City of North Las Vegas, is dedicated to enhancing regional response coordination. Their focus is on joint training, raising awareness, and educating stakeholders about UAS threats.
“Drone technology is evolving quickly, and addressing the risks and opportunities it creates requires strong regional coordination,” stated Lucas Basham Murphy, who manages the Strategic Operations and Response Support Division at NNSS. Murphy highlighted that the working group unites diverse partners from public safety, emergency management, and security sectors to streamline information sharing, planning, and responses to drone-related challenges.
A key development for the working group is its incorporation as a subcommittee of the Clark County Local Emergency Planning Committee (LEPC). The LEPC is integral to regional emergency planning, especially concerning hazardous materials and community safety. This integration ensures that drone-related issues are seamlessly woven into county-wide planning initiatives.
Given that drone incidents can impact aviation safety, law enforcement, emergency management, and critical infrastructure protection, the subcommittee’s current participants include NNSS, Clark County Emergency Management, aviation and airspace stakeholders, and various public safety agencies. As the initiative progresses, additional regional partners are expected to join this collaborative effort.
