I-40 Traffic Diverted for Bridge Work at Malcolm Blvd Exit in Valdese

Nighttime Closures on I-40 for Bridge Rehabilitation at Malcolm Boulevard

The N.C. Department of Transportation has announced a series of overnight traffic diversions on Interstate 40 at the Malcolm Boulevard exit as part of an ongoing bridge rehabilitation project. Motorists should prepare for the rerouting of traffic via offramps and adjacent onramps over the next two weeks.

Starting Monday, assuming favorable weather conditions, the westbound section of I-40 under the bridge will be closed nightly from 8 p.m. to 6 a.m. for four consecutive nights. The following week, the eastbound lane will be similarly affected, with traffic diverted to the ramps during the same hours from Monday night onward.

This initiative is a component of a $2.3 million project aimed at enhancing the bridge’s structure. The work involves removing the current superstructure and installing a new one, alongside updating key elements such as guardrails, the driving surface, lane markings, and reflectors.

Officials from the Department of Transportation urge drivers to anticipate brief delays while navigating the area. They emphasize the importance of staying vigilant and adhering to all traffic signs within the work zone.
