BLM Completes Pancake Complex Wild Horse Gather Near Ely, Nevada

Ely, Nev. – The Bureau of Land Management (BLM) has successfully concluded a significant wild horse gather operation in the Pancake Complex near Ely, Nevada, as of April 15, 2026. This initiative resulted in the removal of 300 excess wild horses from public lands, employing a method known as water and bait trapping.

The primary goal of this operation is to prevent unnecessary degradation of public lands resulting from an overabundance of wild horses and burros. It also aims to restore a thriving natural ecological balance and ensure multiple-use relationships on public lands, aligning with Section 1333(b) of the 1971 Wild Free-Roaming Horses and Burros Act. This endeavor addresses the overpopulation issue within and beyond the designated area.

Conducted in accordance with the 1971 Wild Free-Roaming Horses and Burros Act, the gather supports significant advancements toward achieving the Rangeland Health Standards as identified by the Mojave-Southern Great Basin Resource Advisory Council. By maintaining herd sizes that the land can sustain, the BLM seeks to protect habitats for various wildlife species, including mule deer, sage grouse, blue grouse, eagles, and hawks.

The horses removed from the area have been transported to the Sutherland Off-range Corrals in Sutherland, Utah. Here, they will be prepared for the BLM’s wild horse and burro Adoption and Sales Program. Those not adopted or sold will be placed in long-term pastures, where they will receive humane care while retaining their “wild” status and protection under the 1971 Act.
