North Carolina State Treasurer Embraces AI for Enhanced Productivity
In a significant leap towards modernization, the North Carolina Department of State Treasurer has fully integrated artificial intelligence (AI) into its daily operations. Following a successful pilot program that demonstrated a notable productivity boost, the department is now equipping its entire workforce with AI tools to optimize their workflow.
One year after launching North Carolina’s inaugural government AI pilot program, the department has transitioned from testing to fully implementing AI technology. Initial trials with ChatGPT indicated a productivity increase of up to 10% in certain teams, prompting a broader rollout of AI solutions across the department.
“We have a moral obligation to the taxpayer to use their money wisely. That means improving the efficiency of everything we do as state government, and artificial intelligence is already being used throughout the private sector with stunning results,” stated Treasurer Brad Briner. “Our 12-week pilot program with OpenAI showed up to 10% increased productivity in certain divisions. We expect that implementing AI tools across the department will replicate that productivity increase across our entire team, leading to a better return for your taxpayer dollars.”
To maximize the benefits of AI integration, department staff have undergone comprehensive training focused on leveraging AI engines to enhance task efficiency while maintaining strict privacy standards. The department has instituted a rigorous policy to safeguard personal and private data, prioritizing data governance and security as it adopts new technological advancements.
“It’s my team’s responsibility to make sure private and personal information never leaks from our department. Safety and security are paramount,” emphasized Lawrence Koffa, IT Chief Information Officer. “Throughout the last year we have been testing, learning and preparing to help the department launch this broad modernization effort seamlessly. We are excited to help DST employees find ways to modernize their job functions.”
The department’s various divisions, each with unique functions, have adopted multiple AI engines tailored for specific tasks. These include coding, audit comparisons, deep research, brainstorming, uncovering hidden data, and assisting with legal compliance, among others.
To ensure the effective use of AI, the department’s information technology team will monitor AI usage and productivity, enabling division leaders to refine their processes as their proficiency grows and AI technology evolves.
