Nonprofit’s Efficient Use of Grant Money Praised in State Audit
In a noteworthy evaluation, the North Carolina Office of the State Auditor (OSA) commended Baptists on Mission, a nonprofit organization, for its exemplary handling of grant funds allocated for Hurricane Helene relief efforts. The audit confirmed the organization’s adherence to all financial and contractual obligations while repairing homes damaged by the storm.
The OSA examined how Baptists on Mission utilized $3 million in state grants for home repairs in Western North Carolina. The audit concluded that the nonprofit maintained complete compliance with the requirements set by the Office of State Budget and Management, meeting all necessary statutory and financial management criteria.
State Auditor Dave Boliek expressed his satisfaction with the results, stating, “It’s exciting as State Auditor to tell a success story. Baptists on Mission met people in Western North Carolina where they needed to be met, and did so with a sense of urgency.” He further highlighted the organization’s effective use of public funds to complete numerous projects, emphasizing the potential for such models to yield significant returns on investment.
From February 2025 through October 2025, Baptists on Mission accomplished 472 home repair projects funded by the grants. The average cost per project was determined to be $6,392, significantly lower than the initial estimate of $20,000 per home. This reduction in cost was attributed to the use of volunteer labor, obtaining disaster relief discounts from retailers, and bulk purchasing of materials.
The projects were carried out in several locations including Burnsville, Spruce Pine, Hendersonville, Marion, Boone, Canton, Weaverville, and Swannanoa. To support the efforts, Baptists on Mission established six rebuild centers in Western North Carolina to accommodate and provide for volunteers.
No recommendations were made by the OSA for Baptists on Mission, and the nonprofit’s response to the audit was incorporated into the Rapid Response Special Report.
