Smishing Scam Targets North Carolina Toll Users
A new wave of digital scams has emerged, targeting unsuspecting individuals through their mobile devices. The North Carolina Turnpike Authority has issued a warning about a text message scam, known as smishing, where fraudsters impersonate tolling agencies to extort payments for nonexistent unpaid tolls.
These scams are indiscriminate, with phone numbers selected at random, not tied to any specific toll account or road usage. To ensure their customers’ security, NC Quick Pass provides several verification methods for legitimate communications:
- NC Quick Pass will never request payment via text message.
- Authentic links from NC Quick Pass will always contain ncquickpass.com or secure.ncquickpass.com.
This fraudulent activity is part of a series of smishing scams acknowledged by the FBI. For those who receive these deceptive messages, the FBI advises the following actions:
- Submit a report to the IC3 at www.ic3.gov, including:
- The originating phone number of the text.
- Any websites mentioned within the text.
- Verify your account through the genuine toll service website.
- Contact customer service for your toll provider directly.
- Delete any smishing messages received.
- If you interacted with the scam, take steps to secure personal and financial information, and dispute unauthorized charges.
Customers are urged to remain vigilant and report any suspicious NC Quick Pass notifications by visiting ncquickpass.com.
