BLM leases 136 parcels in CO, NV, UT, generating $64.8M in revenue

In a strategic move to bolster domestic energy production, the Bureau of Land Management (BLM) has successfully leased over 131,000 acres for oil and gas development across Colorado, Nevada, and Utah. The quarterly lease sales, held on March 31, brought in a total of $64.8 million, highlighting an ongoing commitment to enhancing U.S. energy security.

State-by-State Breakdown of Lease Sales

The recent auction saw significant interest across three states:

  • Colorado: A total of 68 parcels covering 42,532 acres were leased, generating $8.1 million in revenue.
  • Nevada: 11 parcels amounting to 19,957 acres were leased, with revenues reaching $294,405.
  • Utah: The most substantial return came from 57 parcels, totaling 68,632 acres, which brought in $56.4 million.

Impact of the One Big Beautiful Bill Act

These lease sales were conducted under the One Big Beautiful Bill Act. This legislation has reset the minimum royalty rate for new federal onshore oil and gas production to 12.5%, down from the previous 16.67% set by the Inflation Reduction Act. This change aims to make oil and gas development more attractive economically, potentially leading to an increase in leasing and drilling activities.

Supporting U.S. Energy Independence

Oil and gas lease sales play a crucial role in supporting American energy independence and economic security. As aligned with Executive Order 14154, “Unleashing American Energy,” these efforts by the BLM are designed to meet the energy needs of U.S. citizens and position the nation as a global energy leader.

Leasing is the initial phase in developing federal oil and gas resources, and BLM ensures compliance with the National Environmental Policy Act of 1969 and other legal standards. Each lease is awarded for a 10-year term and continues as long as there is production in paying quantities.
