Ambassador Branstad, who has an extensive background in public service, has brought his expertise in leadership and international relations to the Drake community, significantly enhancing the university’s focus on global citizenship. This has been particularly evident in his efforts to promote citizen-to-citizen diplomacy amid complex geopolitical landscapes.

“It has been an honor to have Ambassador Branstad return to our campus community to serve as Ambassador-in-Residence,” stated Drake University President Marty Martin. “Shaped by his service as both Governor of Iowa and U.S. Ambassador to China, his experience and perspective have provided our students with invaluable insight into the intricacies of foreign affairs. Ambassador Branstad’s dedication to intercultural learning has opened new doors for our institution and expanded opportunities for our students both here and abroad.”

Highlights of Ambassador Branstad’s Contributions

One of Ambassador Branstad’s notable initiatives was the leadership of the U.S.-China Symposium at Drake University, which was held over three consecutive years. The focus on fostering global connections was a cornerstone of the Ambassador-in-Residence position. Ambassador Branstad stressed the importance of keeping Iowa as a central location for international scholarship, stating, “I have always valued the importance of education exchanges as a means of fostering international understanding. We should encourage, not limit, the ability of our higher education institutions to seek the best talent possible from all corners of the globe.”
