CMU Alumnus & Home Depot CEO Ted Decker Speaks at Lecture

Home Depot CEO Ted Decker Returns to Carnegie Mellon University for Insightful Lecture

Carnegie Mellon University (CMU) recently welcomed back one of its distinguished alumni, Ted Decker, CEO and president of The Home Depot, as a part of the President’s Lecture Series. Decker, who completed his MBA at CMU’s Tepper School of Business in 1993, shared his experiences and insights both from his time at the university and his career leading the world’s largest home improvement company.

Ted Decker took the stage at CMU on March 26, engaging with students and faculty about the critical impact of education on his professional journey as well as his strategic approach to business leadership. CMU President Farnam Jahanian praised Decker’s leadership qualities: “Within today’s rapidly shifting landscape, Ted stands apart: He is widely respected for his steadiness, his clarity and his values, and for his leadership style.”

Exploring Business Evolution and Technology

Decker’s lecture covered the evolution of The Home Depot, where he has held various roles since 2000, including president and chief operating officer. Under his leadership, the company has expanded to over 2,350 stores and employed 470,000 associates. Decker also addressed the increasing role of artificial intelligence in business practices and its implications for the future workforce.

A fireside chat followed the lecture, during which Jahanian and Decker discussed essential topics such as the influence of AI on industries and the future of education. Decker emphasized the value of interdisciplinary learning at CMU: “Carnegie Mellon is so well positioned for this, and has historically done such a great job, because you are on the vanguard of this new technology. It’s so unique, to think of the interdisciplinary nature of the school’s faculty, and being able to take courses across schools, having courses that are actually co-developed between schools … I think that’s absolutely the way you approach it.”

Advice for Future Leaders

Addressing future leaders in the audience, Decker encouraged students to leverage CMU’s unique interdisciplinary opportunities: “The interdisciplinary nature of Carnegie Mellon — I would say take advantage of it. This is just a remarkable place to spend four or five years, and whether you’re in computer science or business school or some of the humanities, take advantage of what’s happening on this campus.”

Gifts and Acknowledgments

In appreciation of his visit, CMU presented Decker with a collection of books authored by faculty members, as well as a specially designed apron from the university’s School of Design, featuring elements that resonate with Decker’s interests and role at The Home Depot. The apron was a collaborative effort by Tepper School graduate students Emilie He and Sameer Bhuyan, incorporating symbols of gardening and construction.
