Arizona’s Record-Breaking Export Growth Fueled by Manufacturing Boom
Arizona has made remarkable strides in its export activities, with 2022 marking a record year for the state. Governor Katie Hobbs revealed in her International State of the State address that Arizona’s exports reached an unprecedented $27.2 billion, surpassing the previous high of $25 billion set in 2019. This represents a significant 12.6% increase from the previous year, highlighting the state’s thriving manufacturing sector.
Aerospace Parts and Products led the charge in export categories, contributing $4.6 billion. Not far behind were Semiconductor and Other Electronic Components, adding $4.4 billion to the state’s export total, placing Arizona fourth nationally in this category. Metal Ores added another $2.2 billion to the state’s export tally, the highest in the country.
This success is due to our booming manufacturing sector — aerospace, semiconductors, and electronic components — and continued export outreach and support to our local Arizona businesses,
Governor Hobbs emphasized during her address.
The primary destinations for Arizona’s exports were Mexico, Canada, China, and the Netherlands, with Mexico alone accounting for $8.7 billion. Remarkable growth was also seen in exports to Malaysia and Singapore, which increased by 83.1% and 50.4%, respectively.
According to Sandra Watson, President and CEO of the Arizona Commerce Authority, Arizona’s consistent export growth is a reflection of our state’s strong and growing base of manufacturers, especially small and mid-sized businesses.
She added that the proliferation of high-tech manufacturing facilities across the state, including those in battery, semiconductor, automotive, and aerospace industries, is expected to further boost export figures.
The International Trade Administration reported that 5,591 Arizona companies engaged in export activities in 2020, with small and medium-sized enterprises making up 88% of these exporters.
To assist Arizona companies in expanding their international presence, the Arizona Commerce Authority (ACA) offers several export assistance programs. These include:
- The Arizona State Trade Expansion Program (AZSTEP) – Designed to help small businesses enter and expand in export markets.
- The ExporTech Program – Facilitates the creation of actionable export plans for Arizona manufacturers.
- International Trade Offices – These offices provide export assistance within various regional and country markets, including Europe, Mexico, Israel, and Asia.
