Governor Stein and the 200 Club of Wake County Celebrate First Responders’ Valor
In a heartening event today, Governor Josh Stein joined the 200 Club of Wake County to pay tribute to the courageous first responders of North Carolina. For a quarter of a century, the 200 Club has been a pillar of support for the families of Wake County’s fallen heroes, offering immediate financial relief and scholarships to their children and spouses.
Governor Stein remarked on the bravery of first responders, stating, “First responders run toward danger when others might flee, and they face real challenges in their work. They deserve support for their sacrifices and pay that reflects their value.” His words echo the deep appreciation felt across the state for those who risk their lives to ensure public safety.
Barry Long, President of the 200 Club of Wake County, emphasized the organization’s commitment, saying, “The 200 Club of Wake County is proud to support the families of first responders who have given their lives protecting our community. For more than 25 years, we have had the privilege of standing beside these families, providing immediate financial assistance during their most difficult moments. We remain deeply committed to honoring their sacrifice and look forward to continuing our support of Wake County’s dedicated first responders and their families.”
In line with his dedication to public safety, Governor Stein recently unveiled a $1.4 billion Critical Needs Budget. This initiative aims to address the state’s pressing priorities while awaiting a comprehensive state budget from lawmakers. The proposal includes competitive funding for state law enforcement roles, offering a 6.5% salary increase for juvenile court counselors, probation and parole officers, and a 10% raise for correctional officers, state law enforcement officers, and youth counselors. Additionally, it seeks to stabilize the budgets of the Department of Adult Correction (DAC) and State Bureau of Investigation (SBI), alongside a 10% pay hike for nurses and behavioral health technicians at state-run facilities to bolster mental health services and public safety.
Moreover, Governor Stein is advocating for his $195 million public safety proposal. This comprehensive package includes hiring bonuses for new and relocating officers, salary increases for all state law enforcement personnel, and significant investments in violence prevention. It also aims to enhance cooperation between law enforcement and mental health professionals, ensuring safer communities across North Carolina.
