Temporary Leadership Appointed to Reno Police Department Amid Investigation
The City of Reno is navigating a period of transition as a new temporary leadership arrangement comes into effect for its Police Department. An Interlocal Agreement with the Washoe County Sheriff’s Office has been established to ensure continuity and stability during this time.
Washoe County Undersheriff Corey Solferino has taken on the role of Acting Chief of Police for the Reno Police Department, effective immediately. With over 20 years of experience in law enforcement, Solferino is well-equipped for his new responsibilities. His role as Undersheriff involves overseeing significant operational divisions such as staff management, detention, and administrative services. Solferino’s career has been marked by various leadership roles and collaboration with regional law enforcement agencies, including the Reno Police Department, on public safety initiatives.
This leadership change comes in the wake of the City Manager’s decision to place the Reno Police Chief and five department members on administrative leave. This action is part of an independent administrative investigation into alleged violations of City policy.
Reno Mayor Hillary Schieve expressed gratitude for the support provided by Sheriff Balaam and Undersheriff Solferino. “I want to express my sincere thanks to Sheriff Balaam and Undersheriff Solferino for stepping up to assist the Reno Police Department during this time,” Schieve stated. She emphasized the ongoing partnership between the agencies, which she believes will help maintain public safety and service continuity.
Reno City Manager Jackie Bryant highlighted the city’s commitment to effective police operations and maintaining community trust during the investigation. “The City’s priority is ensuring that the Reno Police Department continues to operate effectively and maintain the community’s trust while this administrative investigation proceeds,” Bryant said. The temporary leadership agreement aims to provide seasoned oversight, allowing the department to focus on essential public safety services for the residents of Reno.
Police services in Reno are set to continue without disruptions. Updates will be shared as more information becomes available and is appropriate for public release.
