Governor and First Lady Celebrate Read Across America Day in Wake County

Governor and First Lady Celebrate Literacy at Local School

In a vibrant celebration of literacy, Governor Josh Stein and First Lady Anna Stein visited Green Magnet Elementary School to mark Read Across America Day. The visit was highlighted by the reading of The Magical Yet by Angela DiTerlizzi to a captivated second-grade class, as the Governor and First Lady engaged with both students and educators.

Governor Stein emphasized the critical role of literacy in education, stating, “Read Across America Day is a celebration of the joy of reading and a reminder that it is the building block for learning.” He highlighted the importance of equipping young students with strong literacy skills and providing necessary support for teachers to ensure student success.

Dr. Robert P. Taylor, superintendent of the Wake County Public School System, expressed gratitude for the Governor’s visit, noting, “We’re grateful to Governor Stein and First Lady Anna Stein for spending time with our students and celebrating Read Across America Day here in Wake County.” He underscored the district’s commitment to fostering strong literacy skills that open doors for children statewide.

Leslie Blake, the principal of Green Magnet Elementary, echoed this sentiment, acknowledging the honor of hosting the Governor and First Lady. “Having leaders who take the time to share the joy of reading with our students sends a powerful message about the importance of literacy,” she stated, reinforcing the school’s dedication to nurturing confident readers.

Governor Stein’s dedication to early literacy extends beyond Read Across America Day. Recently, he visited Bluford STEM Academy to celebrate National Public Schools Week, where he observed literacy instruction aligned with the Science of Reading. During this visit, he engaged with educators in advanced teaching roles, part of his proposed 2025-2027 biennium budget initiatives. More details about this visit can be found here.

In advocating for educational advancements, Governor Stein calls for legislative support to pass a comprehensive state budget. This includes raising starting teacher salaries to the highest in the Southeast, increasing average teacher pay by 10.6%, reinstating master’s degree pay, and boosting funding for school support staff, including nurses, counselors, and social workers.
