Nevada’s Solar Energy Challenges Amid Promises and Policies
Nevada’s renewable energy landscape faces uncertainty as Governor Joe Lombardo’s efforts to revive solar projects remain unfulfilled. Despite assurances of a deal with former President Donald Trump to safeguard Nevada’s energy future, a representative from Advanced Energy United remarked, “such an agreement wasn’t on our radar.”
The Trump administration’s decision to cut $156 million in grants has significantly impacted the state’s energy costs, worsening the financial burden on residents amid high living expenses. Governor Lombardo’s silence on the matter contrasts with his acceptance of Trump’s endorsement, praising the former president’s accomplishments in office.
Under Trump’s policies, Nevadans continue to face some of the highest electrical bills nationwide, with over 80,500 clean energy jobs lost or postponed. Lombardo, meanwhile, has been criticized for taking credit for Democratic-led investments he had previously opposed.
Nevada’s Solar Subsidy Dilemma
The obscure agreement between Trump and Lombardo to restore solar farm subsidies, disclosed in a December podcast, remains one of the most closely guarded secrets amid Trump’s anti-renewable energy measures.
- The Center for Western Priorities reports that Trump’s policies have halted 60 solar projects, many located in Nevada. These projects were initially set to benefit from subsidies promoted by President Joe Biden, who has been criticized by both Trump and Lombardo.
- During a GangboX podcast episode by the Southern Nevada Building Trades Union, Lombardo was asked about his actions regarding the shutdown of energy projects in the state.
- Lombardo mentioned a planned meeting with Burgum to address Colorado River issues, where he intended to discuss the status of the solar fields.
- Despite these discussions, Lombardo has not provided further details about the agreement with Trump or the administration’s efforts to protect Nevada’s renewable energy resources. He has also not responded to queries from the Nevada Current.
- Adam Weiner from Advanced Energy United expressed surprise, stating, “Such an agreement wasn’t on our radar,” and was unaware of similar agreements in other states.
