STEM Enthusiasts Shine at Nevada Science Bowl

In a showcase of exceptional talent and knowledge, 24 teams from 20 high schools across Nevada gathered for the 35th annual Nevada Science Bowl. Hosted by the Nevada National Security Sites (NNSS), the event on January 31 was a thrilling contest of quick thinking and scientific prowess.

Davidson Academy emerged as the champion for the seventh consecutive year, earning their school’s math and science departments a $5,000 cash prize. This victory also secured their spot to represent Nevada at the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) National Science Bowl in Washington, D.C. later this year. Hug High School claimed the second spot with a $3,000 prize, while Clark High School (Team A) finished third, taking home $1,500.

Annually, over 15,000 students nationwide vie for a chance to participate in the DOE National Science Bowl. At this year’s Nevada event, NNSS leaders underscored the importance of STEM education and highlighted how the NNSS can be a gateway to careers that bolster national security.

Deputy Field Office Manager Carlos Alvarado from the National Nuclear Security Administration’s Nevada Field Office remarked, “I like to think of this as the first step in the journey for these students, for them to really fall in love with science and pursue it as a career. They can apply that knowledge to help their neighbors and our nation, and to let that knowledge carry them as far as they want to go—to the limits of their imagination.”

Following Alvarado’s comments, NNSS Chief of Staff Brent Baker addressed the participants, saying, “You are the future leaders of this country, and it’s a bright future. Seeing you out there today, I have no doubt that our nation is going to be in good hands.”

Key sponsors for the 2026 Nevada Science Bowl include the U.S. Department of Energy National Nuclear Security Administration Nevada Field Office, Mission Support and Test Services LLC, and Environmental Management Nevada Environmental Program Services.
