Public Input Sought for Potential Oil and Gas Lease Sale in Nevada
The Bureau of Land Management (BLM) is inviting public feedback on a proposal to lease 14 oil and gas parcels, covering a total of 20,600 acres in Nevada, for a potential lease sale in September 2026. This 30-day public scoping period is open until March 11, 2026, providing a platform for stakeholders to voice their concerns or support.
Leasing marks the initial phase in the exploration of federal oil and gas resources. Before any development can proceed, operators must submit a detailed application for a permit to drill, outlining their development plans. The BLM is responsible for reviewing these applications, ensuring public access to the information, conducting necessary environmental analyses, and collaborating with state agencies and other stakeholders.
Each parcel in a federal lease sale is accompanied by specific stipulations aimed at safeguarding essential natural resources. Information regarding current and forthcoming BLM leases can be found on the National Fluid Lease Sale System. The BLM’s lease sales are conducted online through EnergyNet.
Details about the parcels under consideration, including maps and instructions for submitting comments, are available on the BLM’s ePlanning website at this link.
The BLM supervises approximately 245 million acres of public land, primarily in 12 western states, including Alaska, on behalf of the American public. Additionally, it oversees 700 million acres of sub-surface mineral estate nationwide. The agency’s mission is to maintain the health, diversity, and productivity of America’s public lands for both current and future generations.
