FBI Revelation Shocks Colorado Man with Disturbing News About Mother’s Remains
In a tranquil setting on the slopes of Maui’s Haleakalā Volcano, Derrick Johnson laid his mother’s ashes to rest under a golden dewdrop tree. Little did he know, a phone call from the FBI would shatter his peace with a harrowing revelation.
Johnson, who was in the midst of teaching a gym class on February 4, 2024, received a call from a woman claiming to be with the FBI. “Are you the son of Ellen Lopes?” she inquired, prompting Johnson to recall the conversation with The Associated Press. The woman advised him to look up a funeral home named Return to Nature.
Confusion turned to horror as Johnson discovered reports about the funeral home’s shocking practices. The gruesome details included hundreds of decomposing bodies and a declaration of a state of emergency by the governor.
The FBI confirmed a week later that Johnson’s mother was among the 189 bodies found in a Penrose, Colorado building owned by Jon and Carie Hallford. The couple had fraudulently taken payments for cremations and were later arrested in Oklahoma, facing charges of corpse abuse and defrauding the government of pandemic aid.
Families, including Johnson’s, were left to grapple with the realization that the ashes they received were fake. The Hallfords’ fraudulent activities extended beyond the funeral home, involving luxurious personal expenses.
“She lied”
The Return to Nature funeral home, advertised as offering environmentally friendly services, was operated by Jon and Carie Hallford. Carie interacted with families, promising to care for their deceased, while Jon managed operations behind the scenes. Johnson recalls being handed a box of supposed ashes with assurance from Carie about his mother’s care, only to later discover the betrayal.
Video evidence from September 2023 depicted Jon Hallford moving bodies inside the Penrose facility. Text messages revealed his casual attitude towards the gruesome conditions.
A shocking scene
The building’s discovery came after complaints of a strong odor. Investigators found a scene that shocked even seasoned professionals. Bodies were stacked, some decomposing for years, with conditions described as appalling.
Authorities found evidence of attempted water cremation and possibly fake ashes made from Quikrete. The investigation revealed a setup that included detritus from decomposition and improper handling of remains. Identification of bodies involved painstaking efforts, with some found far from their intended final resting places.
Justice on the horizon
Jon Hallford’s sentencing is imminent, facing up to 50 years in prison, with Carie’s hearing set for April. Johnson, who struggled with panic attacks and PTSD, plans to confront the Hallfords in court, seeking closure through justice.
