University of Virginia’s Education School Secures Top Rankings in Online Graduate Programs

The University of Virginia’s School of Education and Human Development has achieved a significant milestone by being recognized among the top five online graduate education programs in the nation. According to the 2026 Best Online Programs rankings by U.S. News & World Report, the school has climbed four places to secure the fifth position, sharing the spot with Montclair State University and San Diego State University. The rankings involved a comprehensive assessment of over 300 institutions.

Notably, three of UVA’s online graduate programs have received recognition in their specific fields, earning top-10 positions:

  • Special Education: Ranked at No. 4 (tie)
  • Administration and Supervision: Secured the No. 6 spot (tie)
  • Curriculum and Instruction: Positioned at No. 9

Furthermore, the institution has distinguished itself as No. 2 nationwide for the best online master’s in education programs for veterans. This accolade is based on the overall program quality and the financial advantages provided to veterans and active-duty service members. The school’s online master’s degree in education program continues to hold the top rank within Virginia.

The rankings by U.S. News & World Report are based on five critical criteria: student engagement, peer assessment, faculty credentials and training, services and technologies, and student excellence.

Catherine Brighton, the Education School’s senior associate dean for academic programs and student affairs, emphasized the significance of this achievement: “Earning a top-five national ranking underscores our mission to expand access to quality degree programs with the academic rigor UVA is known for. It’s a testament to the care and expertise our faculty and staff bring to online learning and student support.”
