Florida Encourages Student and Educator Engagement in Black History Month Contests

Tallahassee, Fla., January 26, 2026 – The Florida Department of Education, in collaboration with Volunteer Florida, is calling on students to join the 2026 Black History Month art and essay contests. The theme for this year, “Celebrating Black History,” aims to honor African American contributions throughout February.

Commissioner of Education Anastasios Kamoutsas emphasized, “Black History Month is a time to celebrate the profound contributions of African Americans to Florida’s rich history and culture. I hope every student takes this opportunity to learn about the ways Florida has been shaped and strengthened by these contributions.”

Josie Tamayo, CEO of Volunteer Florida, noted, “Black History Month contests provide an opportunity to celebrate excellence while honoring the lasting contributions of African Americans across our state. We are proud to recognize students and educators whose efforts bring history to life and inspire learning beyond the classroom.”

All Florida students are welcomed to engage in contests under this year’s theme. Young artists in grades K-3 can participate in the art contest, while those in grades 4-12 can enter the essay contest. Additionally, nominations for the Black History Month Excellence in Education Award are open for full-time educators across all grade levels.

Student Art Contest Details

Kindergarten through grade three students in Florida can enter the 2026 Black History Month art contest. Participants should submit one original, two-dimensional artwork reflecting this year’s theme. The contest will select four statewide winners, each receiving a $200 gift card for school supplies and a 1-year pass to Florida State Parks.

Student Essay Contest Information

Students from grades 4-12 attending any Florida school are encouraged to participate in the essay contest. Six winners will be announced: two from elementary (grades 4-5), two from middle (grades 6-8), and two from high schools (grades 9-12). Winners will be awarded a 2-year Florida College Plan scholarship from the Florida Prepaid College Foundation and a $200 gift card for school supplies.

Entrants must be Florida residents, enrolled in grades 4-12 (including various school types such as public, charter, and home school), and provide a Social Security Number. Each submission should be a single essay, in English, and not exceed 500 words.

Excellence in Education Award

The Black History Month Excellence in Education Award Contest, supported by Governor Ron DeSantis and First Lady Casey DeSantis, is open to all full-time educators in Florida’s elementary, middle, or high schools. Four awardees will be chosen, with nominations accepted from principals, teachers, parents/guardians, or students. Winners will receive $2,500 from Volunteer Florida.
