Seasonal Closure Announced for High Rock Canyon Road
In a move to protect the natural habitat and historic trails, a section of High Rock Canyon Road in the Black Rock Desert-High Rock Canyon Emigrant Trails National Conservation Area (NCA) will be temporarily closed to public access. The closure is set to take effect from Monday, February 2, through Friday, May 9, 2025.
High Rock Canyon Road, a significant route within the NCA, will be inaccessible from its southern entrance stretching to approximately five miles below Stevens Camp. This decision is part of an annual effort by the Black Rock Field Office, Winnemucca District, Bureau of Land Management, to protect the environment during critical wildlife periods.
According to Jonah Blustain, Field Office Manager, “The intent of the closure is to prevent damage to the emigrant trail and reduce human disturbance during seasonal lambing bighorn sheep and nesting raptors.” This closure aligns with the resource management plan for the NCA, which aims to minimize human impact on sensitive ecological areas.
The timing of the closure is strategically planned to commence after the conclusion of the Chukar hunting season, lasting until the second weekend in May. This allows for the protection of species during vulnerable times, such as lambing and nesting.
For any inquiries or feedback regarding this annual closure, individuals are encouraged to reach out to Ellen Brecke, Wildlife Biologist, at 775-623-1500.
