Arizona and Maricopa County Lead in Attracting Skilled Workers

Arizona and Maricopa County Shine in Skilled Workforce Attraction

In the competitive landscape of workforce development, Arizona and Maricopa County have emerged as top contenders, gaining recognition for their success in attracting skilled workers. The latest Talent Attraction Scorecard by Lightcast has once again placed Maricopa County at the forefront for the sixth time in seven years.

Maricopa County’s consistent performance in the rankings underscores its ability to draw skilled labor, achieving the top spot for four consecutive years. Sandra Watson, President and CEO of the Arizona Commerce Authority, emphasized the state’s appeal by stating, There’s no better place in the nation for skilled workers than Arizona.

Key Factors Contributing to Arizona’s Success

Several factors have contributed to Arizona’s high rankings:

  • 2nd in Competitiveness – Maricopa County ranks second nationally.
  • 3rd in Job Growth – Arizona’s job growth outpaced that of Florida and Texas.
  • 5th in Skilled Job Growth – The state ranks fifth for increasing skilled jobs, which require advanced training or education.

Population growth has also played a significant role. In 2022, Maricopa County recorded the largest numeric population growth among U.S. counties, adding 56,831 residents.

Innovative Workforce Development Initiatives

The state’s commitment to workforce development is evident in initiatives like Drive48, a cutting-edge training center near Phoenix. Since its inception, over 2,600 Lucid employees have received hands-on training, enhancing skills crucial for electric vehicle manufacturing.

Building on this momentum, Governor Hobbs introduced the first two Future48 workforce accelerators in collaboration with Mohave Community College and Arizona Western College. A third accelerator focused on the semiconductor industry was announced in Maricopa County in November.

Governor Hobbs also unveiled a groundbreaking Registered Apprenticeship Program for the semiconductor sector, in partnership with NXP and other organizations. This program begins with industrial manufacturing technicians and aims to expand to other occupations.

Arizona continues to invest in the Arizona Advanced Technology Network, fostering advanced training and skill development at universities and community colleges.
