In a significant move for Drake University, Joseph M. Valenzano III has been appointed as the institution’s next provost. Valenzano, who brings with him a wealth of academic leadership as the current Dean of the College of Communication at Butler University, is set to assume his new role on July 1, 2026. This transition follows the planned retirement of current Provost Sue Mattison, announced in March 2025, as per previous reports.
Valenzano will be stepping into the position of chief academic officer, where he will manage Drake’s seven colleges and schools. According to Drake University President Marty Martin, “Dr. Valenzano is a visionary leader who understands firsthand the transformative power of a private, mission-driven liberal arts education.” Martin emphasizes Valenzano’s collaborative leadership style, dedication to student success, and innovative approach as key strengths that make him well-suited to lead Drake’s academic future.
The decision came after a nationwide search spearheaded by a Provost Search Committee. This committee included faculty, staff, students, alumni, and a trustee, and was chaired by Professors Sandy Henry and Chuck Phillips. Valenzano emerged as the top choice from over 80 candidates, following thorough evaluations and on-campus interactions with the Drake community. His appointment received unanimous approval from the Drake Board of Trustees in January.
Valenzano’s Vision and Accomplishments
Boasting two decades of experience in higher education, Valenzano has a robust portfolio of leadership and innovation. At Butler University, he significantly increased philanthropic contributions to his college and led initiatives such as the creation of the Butler Sports and Entertainment Institute. He also developed new degree programs, expanded study abroad opportunities, and created unique experiential learning and student ambassador programs in the Indianapolis area.
Before Butler, Valenzano was affiliated with the University of Dayton, where he held positions including Department Chair and Academic Senate President. His scholarly work, which examines the intersections of religion, politics, and popular culture, has been widely published. Valenzano is an alumnus of Georgia State University, the University of Maine, and Providence College.
Reflecting on his new role, Valenzano stated, “Drake University represents the rare combination of strengths I have loved and enjoyed about the places where I have had the good fortune to work and learn.” He looks forward to fostering relationships within the Drake community and advancing its mission-driven and innovative ethos.
Tribute to Provost Sue Mattison
Provost Sue Mattison, who joined Drake in 2016, has been a pivotal figure in upholding academic excellence and advancing student welfare. Her leadership has been particularly noted during the challenges posed by the pandemic. President Martin praised her efforts, saying, “Provost Mattison’s leadership has been exceptional. From guiding us through the challenges of the pandemic with her expertise in epidemiology to spearheading the development of nation-leading academic programs, the legacy of her service will be felt for generations to come.”
Mattison will continue to serve until the end of the academic year, ensuring a seamless transition as Valenzano steps into his new role.
